In Memoriam - Ronald Wonnacott (posted Feb. 6)
Professor Emeritus, Ronald Wonnacott, a retired Faculty member from the Department of Economics, died on January 29, 2018 at the age of 87. When he retired in 1996, Ron had 38 years of service at Western.
Beloved husband of Eloise Wonnacott for 63 years. Loving father of Doug (Debi) of Houston TX, Rob (Nathalie) of Calgary AB and Cathy Long (Greg) of Seattle WA. Also loved by his grandchildren Brandon, Jason, Victoria, Ben, Devin, Tanner and Adam. Great grandfather to Ryan, Carter and Allie. Dear brother of Paul (Donna), Tom (Elizabeth), Joy Becker (Lorne), and Alma Scovil (Peter). Thank you for the care and support from Gemma Romasanta, Deb Wienkowski and all the staff at Windermere On The Mount and University Hospital.
Ron received a BA in 1955 from the University of Western Ontario, where he was Student Council President. He received an AM (1957) and PhD (1959) in economics from Harvard. Except for brief appointments at the Harvard Law School, University of Minnesota and London School of Economics, his teaching career was at the University of Western Ontario from 1958 until his retirement in 1996. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a former president of the Canadian Economics Association and William G. Davis Professor of International Trade at the University of Western Ontario. He received an honorary LLD from Western in 2001. His publications were extensive and often in cooperation with his brothers. He wrote about international trade including Canadian-American Dependence. With his brother Paul, he published a study on Free Trade between Canada and the United States: The Potential Economic Effects (Harvard University Press, 1967). This helped to revive the debate over reciprocity in Canada and culminated in the 1989 Canada-US free trade agreement. Ron and Paul also collaborated on numerous micro and macroeconomics books. He wrote journal articles on a broad range of topics, in particular, on customs union theory, the Canada-US Auto Pact, and recent Free Trade Agreement proposals, industrial strategy, foreign investment, and non-tariff, as well as tariff barriers. In the early 1990s he was a strong supporter of the free-trade negotiations between Canada, the US and Mexico that subsequently led to the trilateral NAFTA. With his other brother Tom he published numerous books in statistics and econometrics. These books have gone through many editions and have been translated into nine languages. He consulted for a wide variety of agencies and testified before a number of Canadian and US government committees.
He enjoyed skiing, Mozart and especially golf, where he once played off 5. He was a member of the London Hunt Club, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers at Muirfield, and the Sunningdale England Golf Club. Cremation has taken place and a funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Metropolitan United Church, 468 Wellington Street, London. In Memoriam - Allan Olson (posted Jan. 25)
Allan Olson, retired as a faculty member, from the department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering in 1996 after 38 years of service at Western. Allan died on January 13, 2018 at the age of 87.
Son of Emil and Margaret Olson. Beloved husband of the late W. Bernice Olson (Dilling). Devoted brother of sisters Leila Walter (Jack), Irene Gillespie (Bob), and Connie Laycock (Ross Hill) and families. Loving father of Elizabeth Filan (Brian) and David Olson (Wendy). Proud grandpa of Nathan and Paul Filan, and Connor Olson. Retired professor, P.Eng. U.W.O., Allan will be sadly missed by all.
A memorial reception will be held at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Monday, January 29, 2018 from 2:00-5:00 p.m., with words of remembrance at 3:30 p.m. The family would prefer, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in his name. In Memoriam - Gerald Fridman (posted Jan. 24/18)
Professor Emeritus, Gerald Fridman had 19 years of service when he retired in 1994 from the Faculty of Law. Gerald died on November 24, 2017 at the age of 89.

In Memoriam - James McAuley (posted Jan. 8/18)
James McAuley was a faculty member with the Surgery department at the time of his death on December 28, 2017. He was 61 and had 11 years of service at Western.
Passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, December 28th, 2017, after a heroic and dignified battle against a brain tumour. Adoring husband to his wife Diane of 36 years. Son of Frances, brother of Michael (Dianne). Loving father to Erin (Mark) and Alexander (Lauren). Proud grandfather of Patrick and Sebastian. Cherished friend of his patients and colleagues throughout the world. Jim was a singularly talented and dedicated Orthopaedic surgeon who approached the care of his patients with the same love and kindness with which he treated all those he came across. Beyond being a world class surgeon, his family was everything to him and he never let them forget it. A true gentleman in the purest sense of the word, and a devout Catholic, he embodied the virtues of compassion and gentleness. May he rest in the peace he so richly deserves. The family would like to express their sincerest thanks to all of their friends who gave their help so generously, and in particular to MarieCris Macatiguib – their angel whose tender care of Jim in his final days is a debt they can never repay.

In Memoriam - Helena Plecien (posted Jan. 8/18)
When she retired from Facilities Management in 1996, Helena had 28 years of service at Western. She died on December 19, 2017 at the age of 84.
Loving mother of Mark (Katherine) and Stefan (Gaynor). Dear grandmother of Sarah, Michael, Melissa, Cheri, Michael, Matthew, Natasha and Jennifer and great-grandmother of Tristan, Skyler, Carter, Kyla, Emma, Avery and Madison. A private family funeral was held at HARRIS FUNERAL HOME , 220 St. James St. at Richmond on Wednesday, December 27. Interment Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer Society.
